Sacramento, California – Drivers along Interstate 5 have a narrow window this afternoon to prepare for strong crosswinds that could disrupt travel before conditions ease by late evening Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, breezy north winds are pushing through much of Northern California, with the strongest impacts focused along and west of the I-5 corridor. Gusts are expected to gradually weaken as the region moves into the late afternoon and evening hours.

The Sacramento Valley, including Woodland, Davis, and areas stretching south toward Stockton, will see the most consistent wind impacts. Elevated roadways and open farmland near the Delta are especially vulnerable to sudden gusts capable of shifting high-profile vehicles. Caltrans crews are monitoring conditions along I-5 and State Route 160, where crosswinds can quickly become hazardous.

West of the interstate, communities closer to the coast and Delta region may experience more persistent gusts through the late afternoon. Light outdoor objects, including patio furniture and trash bins, could be displaced.

Residents are urged to secure loose items, avoid unnecessary travel in high-profile vehicles, and keep both hands on the wheel when driving through exposed corridors. Charging devices ahead of time is also recommended in case of isolated power disruptions.

Winds are expected to taper off by late Sunday evening, but additional updates may be issued if conditions persist longer than expected.
