Abilene, Texas – Triple-digit heat and gusty winds are combining to create a fast-moving fire threat across West Texas by mid-afternoon Sunday, with temperatures climbing to 100°F and winds strong enough to spread flames quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, highs will reach the mid-90s to near 102°F across the Big Country, including 100°F in Abilene and up to 102°F near Rotan. Southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph, with higher gusts, will peak during the late afternoon hours, creating critical fire weather conditions across a large portion of the region.

Communities including Sweetwater, San Angelo, Ballinger, and Brownwood will see temperatures ranging from 96°F to 101°F, with dry air and wind aligning during peak heating hours. Fire officials warn that any spark could spread rapidly, especially along open areas near U.S. Route 277 and Interstate 20 corridors.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay activities that could generate sparks. Power equipment use should be limited during the hottest, windiest part of the day.

The heat is also challenging records. Abilene’s standing record of 92°F and San Angelo’s 92°F mark are likely to be surpassed.

Critical fire conditions will persist through early evening, with additional advisories possible if winds remain elevated into tonight.
