Maryland–Virginia – Sunshine is quickly warming roads and neighborhoods this morning, but a volatile shift is building that could disrupt travel before the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, temperatures climb to near 83°F across Annandale and much of Northern Virginia today. Light winds keep conditions calm early, but instability increases through the afternoon. Severe thunderstorms may develop later today into tonight, especially north of I-66 and along the I-95 corridor.
Drivers should plan ahead. Roads like I-495, I-66, and Route 50 could turn slick quickly if storms arrive during peak travel hours. Damaging wind gusts and large hail are the main concerns, with isolated stronger cells possible.
Patchy fog earlier this morning is already lifting, improving visibility across Fairfax County and into D.C. However, conditions may deteriorate rapidly by late afternoon as clouds build and storms begin to organize.
Rain chances increase to around 60% tonight, with showers and thunderstorms most likely between late evening and early Monday morning. Expect brief heavy downpours that could reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways.
By Monday, cooler air moves in with highs near 57°F and lingering showers early. Winds shift north and gust up to 30 mph, adding a brisk feel after today’s warmth.
Looking ahead, quieter spring weather returns Tuesday with sunshine and highs near 51°F. A gradual warm-up follows midweek before another chance of rain late week.
Stay weather-aware and avoid unnecessary travel during storms.
