Pennsylvania – Warm air surges across Pittsburgh this morning, but towering clouds building to the west signal a volatile shift that could bring damaging storms by the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) is in place for severe thunderstorms later today across western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia. Temperatures will climb to around 81°F this afternoon, creating the instability needed for storms to intensify quickly.
By late afternoon into the evening, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop and strengthen. Some storms may produce wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to golf ball size. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Travel along I-376, I-79, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike could become hazardous with sudden downpours and reduced visibility.
Rain continues into early Monday before conditions begin to improve. Cooler air follows, dropping highs to the upper 40s with breezy northwest winds making it feel even colder.
By Monday night, skies clear and temperatures fall sharply to near 27°F. Any leftover moisture could refreeze, creating slick spots for early Tuesday travel, especially on bridges and untreated roads.
Midweek brings calmer weather with sunshine and highs returning to the 50s, followed by a gradual warmup into the upper 60s by Thursday. Another round of rain may develop late week.
Plan ahead for rapidly changing conditions later today and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm timing if possible.
