Springfield, Illinois – Severe storms are expected to develop across central Illinois Monday afternoon, with conditions deteriorating quickly after 4 p.m. as threats shift from isolated storms to widespread impacts on travel and power infrastructure.
According to the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center, confidence is high that severe weather will occur Monday into Monday night, with more than a 30% probability of severe storms across much of the state. Central Illinois, including Springfield, Bloomington, Peoria, and Decatur, sits in a Level 3 risk zone where damaging wind gusts could exceed 60 mph, large hail over 1 inch is possible, and several tornadoes—including stronger EF2-level storms—cannot be ruled out.
Storms are expected to organize along and east of the Illinois River, impacting key corridors such as I-55, I-72, and I-74 during peak evening travel. Power outages, downed trees, and rapidly changing road conditions are likely in stronger cells. Schools and evening activities may face disruptions if storms intensify during dismissal and commute hours.
