Scranton, Pennsylvania – Strong thunderstorms could develop quickly by 3 p.m. Sunday across northeast Pennsylvania, with the potential to produce damaging winds, hail, and bursts of heavy rainfall during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, isolated to scattered storms are expected between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, with the highest risk focused south of Interstate 81, including areas near Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton. A Level 2 risk indicates scattered severe storms are possible, though not widespread.

Cities including Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, and Towanda could see rapidly changing conditions, with brief but intense downpours reducing visibility and ponding water on roadways like I-81 and Route 6. Wind gusts strong enough to down small branches and isolated hail are also possible in stronger cells.

While central New York is expected to remain below severe limits, northeastern Pennsylvania sits on the northern edge of a more active storm zone pushing in from the south.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and remain weather-aware Sunday afternoon. Storms will move out by early evening, but additional updates may be issued if conditions intensify.
