Omaha, Nebraska – Fires could ignite and spread in minutes across eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa through the overnight hours, as powerful winds and extremely dry air create volatile conditions into early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday, with southwest winds sustained at 15 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 35 mph. Relative humidity has dropped as low as 8 percent, a combination that can rapidly accelerate any spark into a fast-moving fire.

The warning covers a wide stretch of the state, including Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy, and Dodge counties in Nebraska, along with Pottawattamie and Mills counties in Iowa. In Omaha and Lincoln, open fields, roadside ditches, and construction zones are especially vulnerable. Even a discarded cigarette or equipment spark could trigger a fire that spreads across multiple properties.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning and secure equipment that could produce sparks. Drivers along I-80 and Highway 75 should remain alert for reduced visibility if fires develop nearby.

Conditions are expected to improve after 4 a.m. Sunday as humidity levels recover and winds ease, but additional fire weather concerns could return if dry patterns persist into early next week.
