San Francisco, California – Drivers, outdoor workers, and residents across the Bay Area faced unusual March heat last week as temperatures surged into the upper 80s and low 90s, setting records in at least a dozen cities and pushing cooling demand well above seasonal norms.

According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, cities including Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Richmond, Livermore, downtown San Francisco, SFO Airport, Redwood City, Oakland Museum, and Salinas Airport all recorded new daily or monthly highs between Monday and Friday. Redwood City peaked at 94°F, while multiple locations, including Santa Rosa and San Rafael, reached or exceeded 90°F during the stretch.

The heat extended statewide impacts, increasing early-season fire concerns and straining energy use during peak afternoon hours. Inland valleys saw the most intense warming, while coastal zones like San Francisco still climbed to around 86°F, well above typical March averages.

In the North Bay, Santa Rosa hit 92°F by midweek, while Napa reached 90°F. East Bay locations like Oakland and Richmond recorded highs between 86°F and 91°F. South Bay readings included San Jose tying records at 87°F.

Residents were urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and check on vulnerable populations. Officials also advised preparing for fluctuating conditions as temperatures begin to moderate.

While the extreme heat has eased, officials warn additional swings are possible heading into early next week, with updated advisories expected if conditions shift again.
