Gaylord, MI – Wet snow is already coating stretches of roadway across northern Michigan, creating slick travel conditions that could worsen within the next few hours as heavier bursts move through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, periods of snow will continue through Saturday afternoon before mixing with rain by early evening. The most consistent snowfall is targeting the eastern Upper Peninsula, where totals between 1 and 3 inches are expected by sunset. In northern lower Michigan, including Gaylord and surrounding communities, overall accumulation remains light, but slushy patches are forming on untreated roads.

Heavier bands shifting southeast are briefly reducing visibility and increasing the risk of spinouts, especially along US-131, M-32, and rural county roads. Interior sections away from the lakeshore face the highest chance for snow-covered pavement through the afternoon commute.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking on wet snow. MDOT crews remain active, but changing precipitation types could limit treatment effectiveness.

The mix transitions more toward rain by early evening, which should gradually improve road conditions, though isolated slick spots may persist into the night. Additional advisories remain possible if snowfall rates briefly intensify before sunset.
