Des Moines, Iowa – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes across much of Iowa by early Saturday afternoon as heat, dry air, and gusty winds align during peak daytime hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. through 10 p.m. Saturday for southwest, west central, and parts of central Iowa. Humidity is expected to drop to around 15 percent while southwest winds increase to 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 25 mph.
The highest risk stretches from counties including Polk, Dallas, and Warren to more rural areas like Adams, Taylor, and Ringgold. In the Des Moines metro, dry grasses and dormant vegetation create ideal fuel, especially near open fields, roadways, and construction zones. Even a small spark from equipment, vehicles, or discarded cigarettes could trigger fast-moving flames.
State and local officials strongly discourage any outdoor burning. Residents are urged to secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and delay yard work involving sparks. Fire crews warn that response times may be stretched if multiple fires break out.
The risk of fire remains elevated through late Saturday evening, with additional advisories possible if dry conditions persist into early next week.
