Grand Junction, Colorado – Extreme heat and gusty winds are creating immediate fire risks across northwest Colorado today, with record-breaking temperatures and Red Flag conditions peaking through Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, highs are running 20 to 30 degrees above normal, with cities like Grand Junction reaching near 89°F and Moab climbing into the low 90s. Red Flag Warnings are in effect due to low humidity and gusty afternoon winds, which can rapidly spread any fires that start.
Communities including Craig, Rifle, Aspen, and Delta are all experiencing unusually hot and dry conditions. Wind gusts combined with dry vegetation increase the chances of fast-moving wildfires, especially in open terrain and along highways such as US-6 and I-70.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay any activities that could spark a fire. Fire crews remain on alert as even small ignitions could grow quickly under these conditions.
A weak cold front moves through overnight, bringing slightly cooler temperatures by Sunday, though dry conditions will persist. Additional fire weather alerts may remain in place into early next week.
