Austin, Texas – Dangerous heat nearing 100°F is peaking this afternoon across Central Texas, creating immediate fire risk as dry air and gusty winds combine through the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, highs will range from the upper 80s to near 100°F, with areas like Del Rio reaching around 100°F and Austin and San Antonio climbing into the low to mid-90s by midafternoon. South winds between 5 and 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, will further increase fire risks across the region.
Communities including New Braunfels, San Marcos, Kerrville, and Georgetown are all experiencing hot, dry conditions that can allow fires to spread quickly, especially in grassy or rural areas. Major routes like I-35 and US-90 may also see heat shimmer and reduced vehicle performance during peak.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and delay activities that could create sparks. Staying hydrated and limiting time outdoors during peak heat is critical.
The heat eases slightly by Monday, though dry conditions persist into next week. Additional advisories may be issued as fire risk continues.
