Chicago, Illinois – A single rumble of thunder today is your signal to act immediately, as lightning can strike within 10 miles of storms anywhere across the Midwest, including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan, during the active spring and summer season.

According to the National Weather Service, lightning often strikes far beyond the heaviest rain, especially across the Midwest where warm, humid air fuels frequent thunderstorms. Storms can rapidly intensify during the afternoon and evening, producing dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning even when skies appear partly clear nearby.

In Illinois, high-traffic areas like Chicago’s lakefront, Grant Park, and I-90 corridors quickly become high-risk zones when storms develop. In Indiana, Indianapolis locations such as White River State Park and I-65 see similar exposure. Ohio cities including Columbus and Cleveland face elevated risk near open parks and Lake Erie shorelines, while Michigan’s Detroit Riverfront and I-94 corridor also see frequent lightning threats tied to Great Lakes moisture.

Lightning kills about 20 people annually in the United States, with many more suffering long-term injuries including neurological damage, memory loss, and cardiac complications. Many incidents occur during commuting, outdoor work, sports, and waterfront activities when thunder is ignored or storms appear distant.

If you hear thunder, you are already within striking distance. Move indoors immediately into a fully enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle. Avoid open areas, tall isolated objects, and water. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside.

Storm chances will continue across the Midwest through the season, with additional lightning alerts possible as conditions evolve.
