Northern Indiana – As spring ramps up, so does the threat for severe weather, including tornadoes.

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana highlights that tornado watches can occur at any time of year, but they are most common from April through June, with June standing out as the peak month.

Data from 2005–2025 shows:

  • Tornado watches have been issued in every month of the year
  • Activity is much less frequent in fall and winter
  • The highest concentration consistently occurs in late spring and early summer

This trend aligns with the region’s climatology, where warmer temperatures, increased moisture, and stronger storm systems combine to create favorable conditions for severe weather.

Officials emphasize that a Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes—not that one is occurring yet. Residents should:

  • Stay alert to changing weather
  • Know their safe shelter location
  • Be ready to act quickly if warnings are issued

With peak severe weather season approaching, now is a good time to review safety plans and ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
