Amarillo, TX – An intense and unseasonable March heat wave is gripping the Texas Panhandle, with temperatures soaring to near or record levels today and climbing even higher this weekend.

The National Weather Service in Amarillo says highs today will reach the low to upper 90s, including around 94° to 96° in Amarillo, putting the daily record of 96° (set in 1907) in jeopardy.

Even hotter conditions are expected Saturday, when widespread highs push into the upper 90s, with some areas nearing 100°. In Palo Duro Canyon, temperatures could reach 100–102°, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

Several long-standing records may be challenged, including:

  • Amarillo: 92° (1907)
  • Dalhart: 88°
  • Borger: 90°

Forecasters warn that the combination of heat and very dry air will heighten the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending extended time outdoors.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and check on vulnerable individuals, as these temperatures are highly unusual for March and can catch people off guard.
