Fresno, CA – A rare March heat wave is pushing temperatures toward the upper 90s and even 100 degrees across central California, creating dangerous conditions more typical of mid-summer than early spring.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, temperatures are running 20 to 35 degrees above normal, with widespread record highs already being set across the Central Valley. The heat is expected to intensify through the weekend, with some areas potentially reaching their earliest 100-degree readings on record.

Cities including Fresno, Bakersfield, Visalia, and Hanford will experience prolonged heat during the afternoon hours, increasing the risk of heat-related illness, especially for those without access to cooling. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable populations.

The unusual warmth is also accelerating snowmelt in the Sierra Nevada, which could lead to rising rivers and fast-moving water. Despite warm air temperatures, waterways remain dangerously cold.

This heat wave is expected to persist into early next week, with additional records possible. Further advisories may be issued as temperatures continue to climb.
