Springfield, MO – Fires could ignite and spread quickly across southern Missouri today as humidity levels drop as low as 20 percent during peak afternoon heating.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, an unseasonably warm and dry airmass is settling over the Ozarks, creating elevated fire danger through the day. These conditions make it easier for fires to start and spread, especially in grassy and rural areas.

Communities including Springfield, Branson, Joplin, and West Plains will see warm temperatures combined with dry air, increasing the likelihood that even small sparks could lead to fast-moving grass fires. Open areas along U.S. 65, I-44, and rural roadways are particularly vulnerable.

Officials strongly advise against outdoor burning and urge residents to properly dispose of cigarettes, avoid parking on dry grass, and check trailers for dragging chains that could create sparks.

The fire risk will remain elevated through the evening before conditions gradually improve overnight. Additional advisories may be issued if dry conditions persist into the weekend.
