Binghamton, NY – Rain is set to overspread central New York by late morning, with heavier downpours expected during the afternoon that could slow travel across the Southern Tier.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a steady band of rain will move in from the northwest between 10 a.m. and noon, expanding southeast through the day. Rainfall totals will range from 0.25 to 0.5 inches in some areas, with pockets reaching up to 1 inch by late evening.
Cities including Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, and Syracuse will see the steadiest rain during the mid to late afternoon hours, when heavier bursts could reduce visibility below 1 mile. Roads such as I-81, I-86, and Route 17 may become slick during peak travel times.
Farther south into northeast Pennsylvania, including Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, rain arrives later but could still produce periods of moderate to heavy rainfall into the evening.
Residents should allow extra travel time, keep headlights on in reduced visibility, and monitor for ponding on roadways. Rain tapers off overnight, but additional unsettled weather could follow into the weekend.
