St. Louis, MO – A dangerous window for fast-moving grass fires is unfolding along the I-70 corridor today, where dry air and gusty winds could cause flames to spread rapidly through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, elevated wind speeds combined with low humidity are creating ideal conditions for erratic fire behavior, especially near and along Interstate 70. While other parts of Missouri face lower risk, the overlap of wind and dryness in central and eastern areas significantly raises the chance for rapid fire growth.

Communities from Columbia through Warrenton to the St. Louis metro are most vulnerable, with open fields and roadside grass particularly susceptible. Winds may carry embers across roadways like I-70 and nearby highways, increasing the chance of spot fires that can ignite quickly and spread unpredictably.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and never park vehicles on dry grass, as heat from exhaust systems can spark fires. Securing trailer chains is also critical to prevent roadside ignition.

These conditions will persist through the evening before easing overnight. Fire danger may remain elevated into the weekend if dry weather continues, and additional advisories are possible.
