Arlington, Va. – Strong wind gusts could quickly create hazardous travel conditions across northern and coastal Virginia, especially along major highways and bridges heading into early April.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, the 8-to-14 day outlook from Friday, March 27 through Thursday, April 2 shows near-normal temperatures and precipitation across Virginia, paired with an increased likelihood of strong wind events. Gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph, particularly in open areas and along the coastline.
In northern Virginia, including Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax, crosswinds may impact travel along I-95, I-66, and the Capital Beltway. High-profile vehicles could face difficulty on elevated roadways and bridges connecting into Washington, D.C.
Across coastal Virginia, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Hampton Roads region, stronger gusts may develop near the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coastline. Travel along I-64, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, and US-13 could become hazardous during peak wind periods.
Gusty conditions may also lead to isolated power outages where tree limbs and utility lines are exposed. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects and use caution when driving, especially in open or elevated areas.
This pattern is expected to persist into early April, with additional wind advisories possible as conditions evolve.
