Spring Hill, Florida – A man was arrested after deputies said he failed to report a vehicle ownership change within 48 hours, triggering a registry violation investigation.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, Benjamin Roman, 61, was taken into custody March 13 at his residence on Carrin Road in Spring Hill. He is charged with failure to register a change of vehicle ownership within the required 48-hour period.

Deputies said Roman is a registered sexual offender in Florida following a 2011 conviction in New York for first-degree sexual abuse involving contact by forcible compulsion. As part of his status, he is required to report changes in vehicles and other personal information.

The investigation began March 8 during a Sexual Predator Tracking (SPOT) check at Roman’s residence. Detectives conducted a records search through the Driver and Vehicle Information Database (DAVID), which showed Roman had registered a 2014 Ford Explorer on Feb. 27, 2026. Authorities also identified a Chevrolet Blazer associated with the residence, registered to Roman’s girlfriend.

According to investigators, neither vehicle had been properly reported through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Sexual Offender and Predator System (FDLE SOPS). Deputies said Roman allegedly acknowledged he had not reported the newly purchased vehicle within the required timeframe and was unaware he needed to report the second vehicle.

Roman was arrested and initially held without bond. A $2,500 bond was later granted at his first appearance.

The case highlights strict compliance requirements for registered offenders, particularly regarding timely updates to vehicle ownership records, which can impact community notification systems and law enforcement tracking.

The arrest may be relevant to local residents and commuters monitoring public safety compliance in their area.
