Winnipeg, Manitoba – A carjacking attempt in a grocery store lot led to an arrest Sunday night.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to a reported attempted carjacking in the 2100 block of McPhillips Street.
Police allege a 43-year-old man approached a parked vehicle occupied by a 44-year-old woman while armed with a knife. He allegedly attempted to enter the vehicle from the passenger side before the victim drove away to another area of the parking lot.
The woman then entered a nearby grocery store and alerted an off-duty police officer. She was not physically injured during the incident.
With assistance from Air1, officers tracked the suspect to the 2200 block of McPhillips Street, where he was arrested without incident.
Police identified the suspect as Roger Joseph Delauriers, 43. He has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. The allegations have not been proven in court.
Authorities said Delauriers remains in custody awaiting further disposition.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about parking lot safety, particularly during evening hours when visibility is lower and foot traffic fluctuates.
For late-night shoppers and workers, especially students and shift employees, situational awareness in parking areas remains critical.
