Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Temperatures will fall below freezing overnight, bringing a widespread cold snap early Monday that could damage plants, impact plumbing, and create slick travel conditions across the tri-state region.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday for parts of eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia. Lows are expected to drop to around 29 degrees by daybreak, with colder pockets possible in higher elevations.
Cities including Pittsburgh-area communities, Butler, Beaver Falls, New Castle, and Washington, along with Zanesville and Steubenville in Ohio and Morgantown-area ridges in West Virginia, will see several hours of sub-freezing temperatures. Major routes such as I-70, I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike), I-79, and US-22 may develop patchy frost on bridges and overpasses before sunrise, especially between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., increasing the risk of slick driving.
The freeze poses a threat to early-season crops, gardens, and outdoor plumbing. Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and insulate or disconnect outdoor hoses. Extra caution is advised for early drivers on elevated roadways.
Temperatures will rise above freezing after 10 a.m. Monday, ending the immediate threat. Additional alerts may be issued if cold conditions persist into the coming days.
