Omaha, NE – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa today as dangerous fire weather conditions peak by early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon through 8 p.m. Saturday for much of eastern Nebraska and parts of west-central Iowa. Northwest winds between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph, combined with relative humidity as low as 15 to 20 percent, will create ideal conditions for rapid fire growth.
Communities including Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, and Columbus face the highest risk during the afternoon and early evening hours. Dry grasses and crop fields remain especially vulnerable, and even small sparks—from vehicles, machinery, or outdoor burning—could quickly escalate into fast-moving fires.
Residents are urged to avoid any open burning, secure trailer chains, and keep vehicles off dry grass. Outdoor equipment that produces sparks should be used with extreme caution.
Conditions will begin to improve after sunset as winds decrease, but elevated fire danger may persist into Sunday. Additional warnings could be issued if dry and windy patterns continue.
