Illinois – Wet pavement glistens under gray skies this morning as lingering showers move across Champaign, setting the stage for a volatile stretch of spring weather that could quickly escalate by late day.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a line of storms is expected to develop and push across central Illinois later today, with damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph as the primary threat. Large hail and even an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out as storms organize and track east-northeast at 45 to 50 mph.

Rainfall totals between 2 and 4 inches may trigger localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and poor drainage zones. Roads near Champaign, Decatur, and Springfield could see water buildup quickly. Avoid flooded streets and allow extra travel time through the evening hours.

Conditions improve by Sunday, but colder air settles in behind the system. Morning temperatures dip into the low 30s, bringing a real risk of frost. Gardeners should protect early spring plants before sunrise. A brief rain-to-snow mix cannot be ruled out in colder pockets, though impacts stay limited.

By Monday, calmer weather returns with highs near 59°F. That cool air doesn’t last long. A sharp warm-up follows, with temperatures climbing into the mid-70s by Tuesday and near 80°F later in the week, signaling a strong “summer tease” across central Illinois.

Meteorologists are already tracking another round of storms by Thursday, which could bring renewed rain chances to saturated ground.
