Melbourne, Florida – Dangerous surf conditions are putting beachgoers at risk across Florida’s Atlantic coast today, where strong rip currents could turn deadly within minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a high risk of rip currents remains in effect through Wednesday evening for beaches from Daytona Beach through the Space Coast and Treasure Coast. Surf heights of 3 to 5 feet combined with breezy north winds are creating powerful currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore.

Temperatures remain cooler than normal, with highs in the mid to upper 60s across much of east central Florida, including Orlando, Melbourne, and Vero Beach. Rain chances stay low overall, though Okeechobee County and coastal areas may see isolated showers with probabilities between 20 and 30 percent.

Along major beach access points and coastal highways like A1A, officials are urging residents and visitors to stay out of the water or swim only near lifeguards. Rip currents can form even in seemingly calm conditions and are difficult to escape without proper knowledge.

Boating conditions are also considered poor due to choppy waters and persistent winds.

The rip current threat will continue through the day, with additional advisories possible if conditions worsen. Beachgoers should remain alert and follow all local safety guidance.
