South Bend, Indiana – A quick burst of morning snow is creating slick and slushy roads across northern Indiana, but conditions will improve within hours as temperatures climb above freezing.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, light snow showers will taper off by late morning Wednesday, with total accumulation staying under 1 inch. Even minor snowfall is enough to create slippery conditions on untreated roads, especially along US-31, I-80/90, and local streets during the early commute.

Temperatures will rise into the mid-30s to upper 40s by the afternoon, allowing snow to melt and road conditions to improve steadily through the day. Visibility remains mostly good, but drivers should still allow extra stopping distance during the morning hours.

By tonight, conditions stay quiet with lows dipping into the low 30s, though widespread refreeze is expected to be limited as warmer air continues to move in.

Thursday brings the next shift, with a 40 percent chance of rain showers and highs climbing into the upper 40s to upper 50s across the region conditions turn even warmer, with highs reaching into the 60s.

Drivers should remain cautious through the morning commute, but a rapid transition to milder, wetter weather will take hold by Thursday. Additional updates may follow as rain chances increase.
