Oswego, NY – Heavy lake effect snow is hammering communities along the Lake Ontario shoreline overnight, with up to 9 inches expected to pile up before 8 a.m. Wednesday, creating near whiteout conditions and dangerous travel for the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 8 a.m. for Oswego and northern Cayuga counties. The most persistent snow bands are targeting southern Oswego County and far northern Cayuga County, where snowfall rates can quickly overwhelm road crews and reduce visibility to just a few hundred feet.

Key trouble spots include Route 104, Route 3, and stretches near Fair Haven and Oswego, where rapidly shifting snow bands can make conditions change within minutes. Roads may appear passable one mile and become snow-covered the next as intense bursts move inland from Lake Ontario.

Travel is strongly discouraged during the overnight and early morning hours. If driving is unavoidable, slow down, allow extra distance, and prepare for sudden drops in visibility. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle in case conditions deteriorate.

Snow bands will weaken and shift by mid-morning, but snow-covered roads and lingering slick spots may continue to impact travel. Additional advisories could follow if bands persist longer than expected.
