Jackson, Mississippi – A rare March cold snap just reset temperature records across central and northern Mississippi, with readings plunging into the mid-20s early Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, multiple cities tied or broke record low temperatures on March 17, with Greenwood dropping to 26°F, Vicksburg hitting 27°F, and Jackson also falling to 27°F. Greenville matched its long-standing record at 26°F, highlighting the widespread reach of the cold across the Delta and central பகுதைகள்.
These temperatures are well below seasonal norms and pose a risk to early spring vegetation, exposed pipes, and outdoor infrastructure. Sensitive crops and budding plants across the Mississippi Delta may suffer freeze damage, especially in low-lying rural areas.
In Jackson and surrounding communities, the sudden cold created patchy frost during the early morning hours, though major road impacts remained limited. Still, MDOT advises drivers to remain cautious on bridges and overpasses during early commutes when temperatures dip near freezing.
The cold snap will ease as temperatures rebound into the 60s later this week, but the damage to agriculture may already be underway.
More updates are expected as warming conditions return and assessments of crop impacts continue.
