Minneapolis, MN – Snow is moving toward the Twin Cities right now, and roads could turn slick in time for the evening commute as light accumulation begins within the next few hours.
According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities office, a band of snow will push southeast into Minneapolis and St. Paul by late afternoon, with totals generally reaching 1 to 2 inches. While snowfall amounts remain modest, timing is the biggest concern, with impacts expected to ramp up between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Major routes including I-94, I-35W, and Highway 36 could become slippery quickly, especially on untreated surfaces and elevated roadways. Radar imagery shows snow already developing northwest of the metro, with some initial precipitation not reaching the ground before intensifying as it moves into the city.
Drivers should expect slower travel, longer commute times, and reduced visibility during steadier bursts of snow. Officials urge commuters to adjust travel plans, increase following distance, and check Minnesota DOT road conditions before heading out.
Snow will taper later this evening, but slick spots may linger overnight as temperatures hover near freezing. Additional updates may be issued if conditions worsen during peak travel hours.
