New York, New York – A sharp overnight freeze is locking in across the region right now, with temperatures dropping into the teens and low 20s, setting up icy conditions on untreated roads and sidewalks before the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, overnight lows fell to around 24°F in New York City, with colder pockets like White Plains and Danbury near 22°F and parts of the Hudson Valley plunging as low as 12°F. These temperatures are expected to hold through about 10 a.m. Wednesday, keeping surfaces frozen during peak travel hours.

Across the metro area, including Newark, Bridgeport, and Long Island, early morning conditions may include black ice on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads. I-95, the Long Island Expressway, and the Garden State Parkway could see slick stretches before sunrise, especially in shaded areas. Wind chills in the 20s will make it feel even colder despite sunshine returning during the day.

Afternoon highs Wednesday will struggle to recover, reaching only 38°F to 41°F across much of the region, limiting any quick thaw. Coastal areas like Montauk and Long Beach stay even cooler in the mid-30s.

Residents should dress in layers, allow extra commute time, and check on exposed pipes or outdoor plumbing. Cold conditions persist into early Thursday morning, and additional advisories could be issued if another freeze develops.
