Atlantic City, New Jersey – Strong thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could disrupt travel and coastal communities across New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland’s Eastern Shore through early Monday evening as a Tornado Watch remains in effect until 7 p.m.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 68 covers much of New Jersey along with all of Delaware and portions of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, including Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties. In New Jersey, the watch spans 16 counties from Sussex and Warren in the north to Cape May and Atlantic counties along the coast.

Major population centers under the watch include Atlantic City, Trenton, Camden, New Brunswick, Toms River, Wilmington, Dover, and Salisbury-area communities. Storms developing along this corridor could produce damaging wind gusts, brief tornadoes, and heavy rainfall capable of reducing visibility on major highways.

Drivers along I-95, the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Route 1 corridors should prepare for sudden downpours and rapidly changing conditions during the afternoon commute window.

Emergency officials urge residents to keep weather alerts enabled and be ready to move quickly if a warning is issued. The safest location during a tornado warning is an interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building, away from windows.

The tornado watch remains active through 7 p.m. Monday, and additional warnings could be issued if rotating storms develop across the Mid-Atlantic later this afternoon.
