Rome, Georgia – Drivers across north Georgia could encounter sudden bursts of snow and visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less Monday afternoon and evening as scattered snow showers move across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. Monday for a wide swath of north Georgia, including Floyd, Bartow, Gordon, Pickens, and Union counties. The advisory replaced a previously issued alert scheduled for later this week as fast-moving snow showers developed earlier than expected.

Cities including Rome, Dalton, Calhoun, Cartersville, Jasper, Blue Ridge, and Dahlonega may experience brief heavy snowfall bursts that quickly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could push the snow sideways, creating short-lived whiteout conditions for drivers, particularly in open areas and higher elevations.

Despite the snow showers, widespread travel problems are not expected. Road surfaces remain relatively warm, with pavement temperatures above 40 degrees and subsurface ground temperatures near 60 degrees, limiting accumulation mainly to grassy areas and elevated surfaces.

Still, motorists along key routes such as Interstate 75 near Dalton, U.S. 27 through Rome, and Interstate 575 near Woodstock should be prepared for sudden visibility drops during heavier snow bursts.

Snow showers are expected to taper later Monday night, though brief reductions in visibility could continue until the advisory expires at 11 p.m. More updates may follow if heavier bands develop across the mountains.
