Washington, District of Columbia – Strong thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could move into the nation’s capital Monday afternoon, placing Washington, DC under a Tornado Watch until 7 p.m. as a line of severe storms pushes across the Mid-Atlantic.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 67 includes the entire District of Columbia along with large portions of Virginia and Maryland. The watch signals that atmospheric conditions are favorable for tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and intense thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening hours.
Residents across Washington could experience wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, bursts of heavy rain, and dangerous lightning as storms move toward the Interstate 95 corridor. Sudden downpours may create hazardous driving conditions along major routes including I-395, I-295, and the Capital Beltway.
Federal offices, commuters, and travelers moving through Reagan National Airport and downtown Washington should monitor weather alerts closely through the afternoon. Emergency officials advise identifying a safe interior room away from windows and keeping phones charged in case warnings are issued.
The tornado watch remains in effect for Washington, DC until 7 p.m. Monday, and additional warnings could be issued quickly if rotating thunderstorms develop over the capital region.
