Savannah, Georgia – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could impact a large portion of Georgia late Monday morning, placing more than 60 counties under a Tornado Watch until 2 p.m. as storms sweep across the state.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 65 stretches from southwest Georgia through the central counties and east to the Atlantic coast. Major population centers inside the watch include Savannah, Albany, Valdosta, Tifton, Augusta, and parts of the Macon region.

Storms moving east across the state may produce tornadoes, wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, and intense rainfall that quickly reduces visibility. Travel along major routes including Interstate 75 near Tifton and Cordele, Interstate 16 between Dublin and Savannah, and Interstate 95 near the coast could become hazardous during heavier storms.

Communities across southern Georgia including Thomasville, Moultrie, and Valdosta remain in an area where rotating thunderstorms may develop quickly. Coastal counties such as Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, and Bryan may see strong winds and lightning as the storms approach the Atlantic shoreline.

Emergency managers urge residents to keep weather alerts enabled and identify a sturdy interior room away from windows in case a tornado warning is issued.

The tornado watch remains in effect across much of Georgia until 2 p.m. Monday, and additional warnings could be issued quickly as storms continue moving east through the afternoon.
