Wisconsin — Blowing snow races across highways this morning while powerful winds whip through southern Wisconsin. Visibility drops quickly as gusts push fresh snow across roads and open fields.
A Blizzard Warning remains in effect across southern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Madison, Kenosha, Racine, and Waukesha. Meteorologists say whiteout conditions may continue through much of the morning.
Snowfall rates reached ½ to 1 inch per hour earlier, with several more inches still expected before conditions gradually improve later today.
Storm totals vary across the region. Parts of central and eastern Wisconsin could see 6 to 10 inches, while Milwaukee and southeastern counties may pick up 3 to 7 inches.
The bigger concern this morning is wind. North to northwest gusts between 40 and 45 mph continue to whip snow across roadways, creating drifting and sudden visibility drops.
Drivers along Interstate 94, Interstate 43, and Interstate 41 should expect extremely hazardous travel. Blowing snow may briefly reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less.
Conditions should slowly improve from southwest to northeast between late morning and mid-afternoon, as snowfall tapers and winds gradually ease.
However, temperatures will fall sharply this evening, dropping into the single digits overnight. Any melted snow may refreeze quickly, creating icy roads after sunset.
Meteorologists warn this type of flash freezing often leads to crashes during late-day travel.
By Wednesday, March 18, the region begins shifting toward calmer weather as the powerful storm system moves into eastern Canada.
