Iowa — Snow whips across open fields around Des Moines this morning as powerful winds sweep through central Iowa. Visibility drops quickly as drifting snow crosses highways and rural roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. CDT for much of central Iowa. Northwest winds are gusting between 55 and 60 mph, creating widespread blowing and drifting snow. Even as snowfall tapers, the wind continues to produce brief whiteout conditions.

Drivers across Interstate 35, I-80, and I-235 should remain extremely cautious early today. Blowing snow may cover lane markings and create sudden visibility drops on open stretches of highway. Travel may still be dangerous in rural areas where snow drifts build quickly.

Temperatures hover near 8 degrees this morning, but strong winds push wind chills near -15°F. The biting cold can freeze exposed skin within minutes. Residents should bundle up and limit time outdoors.

Conditions slowly improve later today as winds begin to ease. Skies gradually clear with temperatures climbing to around 19 degrees this afternoon, though blowing snow may linger in exposed areas.

Clear skies tonight allow temperatures to fall again, dropping to around 8 degrees. Any remaining moisture on pavement could refreeze, creating slick patches for early travel Tuesday.

A gradual warmup begins Tuesday with highs near 33 degrees and a chance of light snow developing later in the day. That system could bring brief flakes before clearing Tuesday night.

By Wednesday, the weather flips dramatically. Sunshine and southerly winds push temperatures near 57 degrees, launching a rapid spring warmup across Iowa.
