Gaylord, MI – Drivers across northern Michigan could encounter sudden whiteouts and blowing snow today as strong northwest winds push freshly fallen snow across major roadways, including stretches of I-75 and US-131.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, lingering ice early Monday is transitioning into widespread snowfall across northern Lower Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula. Several inches of additional snow are expected through tonight, with the heaviest bands targeting areas near Traverse City, Petoskey, Gaylord, and the eastern U.P. including Sault Ste. Marie.
Wind gusts between 40 and 45 mph will create significant blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility along open stretches of highway and near the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron shorelines. Forecasters warn that whiteout conditions could develop at times as lake-enhanced snow bands intensify.
The strong winds could also worsen damage in areas that experienced heavy icing earlier in the storm. Downed branches and stressed power lines remain possible across parts of northern Lower Michigan.
Colder air is rapidly moving into the region behind the storm. Temperatures are expected to fall into the teens and single digits by tonight, with wind chills dropping below zero in some communities through Tuesday morning.
Travel may remain hazardous into Tuesday as drifting snow continues and bitter cold spreads across the region. Additional advisories or winter weather alerts could be issued as conditions evolve.
