Birmingham, Alabama – Strong winds sweeping across Central Alabama Monday could down tree limbs and disrupt travel before a sharp overnight freeze threatens plants and outdoor plumbing across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Monday for all of Central Alabama. West winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph could blow around unsecured outdoor objects and cause isolated power outages.
Major population centers including Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Anniston, Selma, and Gadsden remain under the advisory. Gusty winds could impact travel along Interstate 65, Interstate 20/59 through Birmingham, and Interstate 85 near Montgomery, especially for high-profile vehicles.
Behind the windy conditions, much colder air will settle across the region overnight. A Freeze Warning will take effect at 10 p.m. Monday and remain in place until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Temperatures could fall to 23°F across northern counties and near 28°F across southern parts of Central Alabama.
The cold snap could damage crops, gardens, and sensitive plants, especially after recent mild weather encouraged early spring growth.
Residents should secure outdoor objects today, protect exposed pipes, and cover or bring in plants before temperatures fall tonight. Additional cold-weather alerts may be issued if temperatures trend lower before Tuesday morning.
