Boston, Massachusetts – Drivers across Massachusetts could face flooded roads and damaging wind gusts late Monday night as a powerful storm pushes heavy rain and 60+ mph winds into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Flood Watch is in effect very late Monday night through early Tuesday for most of southern New England except the outer islands. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 1 to 3 inches across much of Massachusetts and Connecticut, with localized pockets near 4 inches, increasing the risk of flooding on smaller rivers, urban streets, and poor drainage areas.

The heaviest rain is expected Monday evening into the overnight hours. Communities along the I-90 corridor from Springfield to Boston, as well as areas near Hartford, Providence, and Worcester, could see 2 to 3 inches of rain in a relatively short period. Officials warn that underpasses and low-lying roads could fill quickly.

Strong winds will add another layer of concern. A High Wind Watch covers eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where southerly gusts of 55 to 65 mph may develop Monday night. In central and western Massachusetts and much of Connecticut, a Wind Advisory calls for gusts between 45 and 55 mph.

These winds could snap tree limbs and knock down power lines, especially across the Boston metro, Cape Cod, Plymouth, and the South Shore, where gusts near 60 mph are possible. Along the coast, communities including Hyannis, New Bedford, and Provincetown may experience the strongest winds overnight.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways and secure outdoor items before winds increase Monday night. Additional watches or warnings could be issued as the storm intensifies toward early Tuesday.
