Mount Baker, Washington – Drivers heading toward Mount Baker could encounter rapidly worsening travel conditions by 5 p.m. Sunday as accumulating snow begins stacking up across the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit counties. Up to 8 inches of snow is expected overnight, creating slick mountain roads and reduced visibility through the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit counties, including the Mount Baker area. Snowfall totals may reach 8 inches during that period, with the heaviest accumulation occurring overnight.
Travel along State Route 542, also known as the Mount Baker Highway, could become difficult as snow covers higher elevation passes and recreation routes. Snow-covered pavement and limited visibility may slow traffic heading to ski areas or backcountry trailheads Sunday night into early Monday.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and carry winter emergency supplies. Wet, heavy snow could also weigh on tree limbs, raising the risk of scattered power outages in mountain communities.
Snowfall should taper after sunrise Monday, but slick conditions could linger through mid-morning as crews work to clear mountain roads. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates increase overnight.
