Kansas City, Missouri – Drivers across the Kansas City metro could face sudden slick roads and powerful wind gusts Sunday afternoon as a fast-moving system pushes snow and 55 to 60 mph winds into eastern Kansas and western Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 1 p.m. Sunday and continues until 1 a.m. Monday. Snow totals are expected to stay light, generally up to 1 inch, but strong winds may blow snow across highways and reduce traction on untreated roads.

The advisory covers Kansas City, Independence, Liberty, and Platte City in Missouri, along with Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, and Kansas City, Kansas. Major travel corridors including I-70, I-35, I-29, and U.S. 69 could see bursts of blowing snow and sudden crosswinds through the evening commute.

The wind will likely be the biggest concern. Gusts approaching 60 mph could break tree limbs and briefly knock out power in neighborhoods across Clay, Platte, and Jackson counties, as well as Johnson, Wyandotte, and Leavenworth counties in Kansas.

Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down and keep extra distance between vehicles, especially on bridges and elevated roadways. Kansas travelers can check conditions by dialing 511, while Missouri drivers can monitor updates at traveler.modot.org.

Snow and wind should gradually weaken late Sunday night, but hazardous travel may linger until the advisory expires at 1 a.m. Monday, and additional alerts remain possible if winds stay strong.
