Gurnee, Illinois – A Lake County sheriff’s deputy was injured in a late-night traffic crash at a busy Gurnee intersection Saturday.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 10:55 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the intersection of Route 21 and Grand Avenue.

Authorities said the deputy was driving southbound on Route 21 and approaching Grand Avenue when the traffic signal was green for both northbound and southbound lanes. As the deputy entered the intersection, investigators say a northbound Toyota SUV driven by a 44-year-old Park City man allegedly made a left turn onto westbound Grand Avenue, entering the deputy’s path.

The Toyota struck the front of the sheriff’s squad car, causing a collision in the intersection.

Officials said the deputy was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, where she was treated and later released. The driver of the Toyota was not injured, according to authorities.

While deputies and officers worked the scene and blocked nearby roadways, police said three separate drivers drove around traffic control points at different times. Each of those drivers was later determined to allegedly be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested, officials said.

The crash itself remains under investigation by the Gurnee Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office also thanked the Gurnee Police Department and assisting agencies that responded to the crash scene.

The incident temporarily affected traffic at one of Gurnee’s busiest roadway intersections, which is commonly used by commuters traveling between Route 21 and Grand Avenue.
