Arizona’s desert air feels calm and cool before sunrise in Tucson, but a dramatic shift is already building across southern Arizona. Clear skies stretch across the valley, and the first hints of early spring heat are quietly taking shape.
Temperatures will climb quickly over the next several days.
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch from Thursday morning through Sunday evening for Tucson and much of south-central Arizona. Meteorologists say dangerously hot temperatures between 100°F and 108°F are possible as a powerful ridge of high pressure strengthens across the Southwest.
For now, mornings still feel mild.
Early sunshine today pushes temperatures toward the upper 80s, while light winds keep conditions comfortable across Tucson, Oro Valley, and Marana. Still, each afternoon will grow hotter as the week unfolds.
By Monday, Tucson climbs near 88°F, followed by 93°F by Tuesday, right around St. Patrick’s Day. Outdoor celebrations will likely unfold under bright sunshine and early spring warmth.
But the real heat surge arrives later.
By Wednesday, highs approach 98°F, and temperatures could surpass 100°F by Thursday, triggering the start of the Extreme Heat Watch period. The hottest stretch is expected Friday and Saturday, when some neighborhoods may approach 105°F.
Hydration and heat awareness will become important quickly.
Visitors and seasonal residents may be especially vulnerable because bodies have not acclimated to desert heat yet. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest afternoon hours.
Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
Looking ahead, the broader weather pattern shows above-normal temperatures expanding across much of the western United States, signaling a strong early spring warm spell.
