New Mexico skies look calm at sunrise across Albuquerque, but a rough stretch of spring weather is building fast. Winds are already beginning to stir across the Rio Grande Valley, and stronger gusts will arrive as the morning progresses.
Dust may begin lifting off dry fields and desert roads later today.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. across the Middle Rio Grande Valley. Northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected through the afternoon.
Communities including Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, and Santa Fe could see sudden wind bursts along exposed roadways.
Drivers along Interstate 25, Interstate 40, and Highway 550 may encounter strong crosswinds and brief visibility drops where blowing dust develops. In some dust-prone areas, visibility could fall below half a mile.
Secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and lightweight equipment before winds increase.
The wind is only part of the concern.
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. for much of northern and central New Mexico. Very dry air and gusty winds could allow any spark to spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged today.
After the winds ease tonight, the weather pattern shifts dramatically. Sunshine returns and temperatures climb quickly through the week.
By St. Patrick’s Day Tuesday, Albuquerque could reach around 80°F, with even warmer air arriving midweek.
Highs may surge into the upper 80s by Wednesday and near 90°F by Thursday, signaling an early taste of spring warmth across central New Mexico.
