Kentucky fields and ridgelines sit under calm skies this morning, but the air already carries a hint of change. Warm spring breezes will strengthen quickly today across eastern Kentucky, and those winds could turn stormy before the next cold snap arrives.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, southwest wind gusts between 25 and 35 mph will build this afternoon and evening across much of eastern Kentucky, including Jackson, Hazard, Pikeville, and Prestonsburg. The breezy setup comes as temperatures climb toward 75°F, creating an early taste of spring across the region.

Those winds may rattle signs and sway tree limbs along KY-15, KY-80, and nearby mountain roads. Secure outdoor furniture and trash bins before midday. Drivers should expect occasional crosswinds on exposed ridges.

Conditions may become more active later today. Meteorologists are monitoring isolated severe showers and thunderstorms developing late tonight into early Monday morning. Damaging wind remains the main threat, though a brief spin-up tornado cannot be ruled out.

Rain continues into Monday before colder air sweeps into the Appalachian valleys. Temperatures will slide through the afternoon, possibly dipping near 38°F by evening. That shift may allow light snow showers or flurries to mix in across higher terrain.

Travelers should watch for wet pavement early Monday. As temperatures drop, brief slick spots could form on bridges or shaded roads, especially in mountain communities.

By St. Patrick’s Day Tuesday, eastern Kentucky turns colder with highs near 35°F and a few lingering flurries. The chill will not last long.

A noticeable warmup arrives later in the week, with sunshine and temperatures climbing back into the 60s by Thursday, hinting that early spring may be settling in after all.
