Nebraska – Snow begins swirling across open fields west of Omaha this morning as powerful northwest winds surge across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Visibility drops quickly in bursts of blowing snow, especially along exposed highways.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 9 p.m., while a High Wind Warning continues until early Monday across eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Northwest winds will strengthen to 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60–65 mph, creating dangerous blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
Periods of snow will develop across the Omaha metro through the day. Snowfall totals may reach up to 2 inches, but the bigger issue will be the wind. Strong gusts will blow snow across roadways and produce brief whiteout conditions with visibility under a quarter mile.
Drivers along Interstate 80, Interstate 29, and Highway 75 should prepare for rapidly changing travel conditions. Blowing snow across open farmland between Omaha and Council Bluffs could make travel difficult for trucks and high-profile vehicles.
Meteorologists say temperatures will fall steadily through the day as colder air pours into the region. By Monday morning, wind chills could drop between 10 and 25 degrees below zero, especially across eastern Nebraska.
Residents should secure outdoor objects and use caution if traveling today. Strong winds may also knock down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages.
Conditions improve Monday as sunshine returns, though lingering gusty winds and bitter wind chills will keep the air feeling sharply colder.
A major warmup is expected by midweek, with temperatures surging back into the upper 60s by Wednesday, bringing a fast taste of spring to the central Plains.
