Ohio – Flags whip sharply along Cleveland’s lakefront this morning as winds begin strengthening across northeast Ohio. The air still feels mild for March, but conditions will change quickly through the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Wind Advisory takes effect at 2 p.m. and continues until 8 a.m. Monday across northeast Ohio and parts of northwest Pennsylvania. South winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 50 mph, especially near the Lake Erie shoreline.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 90, Interstate 71, and Interstate 77 should prepare for sudden crosswinds this afternoon and tonight. High-profile vehicles could struggle on exposed bridges and elevated roadways near downtown Cleveland and along the lakefront corridor.
Showers may develop later today, leaving wet pavement before colder air sweeps into the region Monday. Temperatures will drop sharply during the day Monday as winds shift behind the front.
Meteorologists say rain may mix with snow by late Monday, with snow showers becoming more widespread Monday night into Tuesday across the Cleveland metro and the traditional snowbelt.
Accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are possible across parts of northeast Ohio, especially east of Cleveland toward Ashtabula County. Gusty winds may create blowing snow and brief visibility reductions during heavier bursts.
Travel conditions could become slick quickly if temperatures drop fast enough for flash freezing on untreated roads and bridges. Drivers should allow extra travel time during early Tuesday travel periods.
After the brief blast of winter, temperatures slowly recover midweek. By Thursday, highs climb back into the lower 50s, hinting that spring weather is not far behind.
Secure loose outdoor items today and monitor local alerts as winds strengthen across northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania.
