Michigan – Wind whips across parking lots and rattles bare tree branches this morning across western Michigan. Temperatures hover near freezing near Grand Rapids, but a powerful March storm is already building stronger wind and rain across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, southwest Lower Michigan could see wind gusts exceeding 45 mph today, with isolated gusts near 60 mph possible in stronger thunderstorms. These winds may snap tree branches and cause scattered power outages across Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, and Allegan counties.

Showers increase through the afternoon as temperatures climb into the lower 60s, giving the day a brief burst of spring warmth. Drivers along Interstate 96, US-131, and M-6 should expect wet pavement and sudden gusts that may push vehicles in open areas. Loose outdoor items could also blow around as the storm strengthens.

Conditions begin changing quickly tonight as colder air pushes into western Michigan. Rain transitions to snow showers late tonight into Monday, and gusty winds could produce patchy blowing snow across open stretches of highway.

Meteorologists also warn that light icing could develop north of Ludington, Baldwin, and Evart if freezing rain mixes in. While ice totals remain uncertain, slick conditions could develop quickly in northern parts of Lower Michigan.

Lake-effect snow becomes the bigger story Monday. Blowing snow and bursts of heavier snow showers may briefly reduce visibility across western Michigan, especially along US-31 and I-96 corridors.

Colder air lingers Tuesday with highs only in the mid-20s, but gradual warming arrives by midweek. By Thursday, temperatures rebound toward the lower 50s, offering a clearer sign that spring is slowly returning.

For now, secure loose outdoor items and allow extra travel time as winds and changing precipitation sweep across western Michigan.
