West Virginia – A bright but breezy March morning greets drivers across the Kanawha Valley, but a fast-moving weather shift could turn wet pavement into slushy roads before St. Patrick’s Day celebrations begin.

Skies start mostly sunny across central West Virginia with temperatures climbing toward 73°F today. Gusty southeast winds near 30 to 34 mph will sweep through Charleston and along the I-64 corridor, rattling loose branches and pushing lightweight debris across roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, clouds increase tonight with a 30% chance of rain after 5 a.m. Monday. Wet pavement may develop early during the morning commute, especially along US-119 and Interstate 77.

Conditions shift quickly Monday afternoon. Rain develops first, then colder air filters into the region. Meteorologists say rain could mix with snow after 2 p.m. Monday, with temperatures falling toward the upper 30s by evening. Gusty west winds around 15 mph will make the air feel sharply colder.

By Monday night, the atmosphere cools enough for periods of snow before midnight, then scattered snow showers through early Tuesday morning. Accumulation looks limited — generally less than a half inch — but slushy patches could appear on bridges and overpasses.

Drivers heading out for St. Patrick’s Day events Tuesday should watch for leftover slick spots early in the day. Highs only reach the low 30s, keeping pavement chilly.

The good news: the chill fades quickly later in the week. Temperatures rebound toward the 60s by Thursday, offering a taste of early spring across the Mountain State.

More updates may follow as the cold front and snow chances approach.
